I love this book! I actually love the series.

When Lacey appeared as a character on True North, I wasn't sure I was going to like her until she took care of Kate when she had her little break down. Then, she could have been a problem in True Devotion but she wasn't.

Lacey Mosely likes to dress up, wear make up and wear expensive shoes. She has worked at the same store since she was a teenager. Her life is in Crowell, Montana and she is happy that way. Nevertheless, she does long for a love like her sister has. She has dated the Sheriff who used to be a QB but her heart has always belonged to just one man, Jake Holt.

Jake was the troubled teenager who moved to a new town. He was the one other teenagers steered clear of except for the cheerleader, prom queen Lacey. He was in love with her but the town had nothing but bad memories for him so he left as soon as he was old enough. He wanted to make something of his life. After years of hard work he is now a private pilot. Fate brings him back to the small town of Crowell and to his first love Lacey.

I can't tell you how much I loved this book. Lacey and Jack had a true connection. This was their needed second chance at happiness.

It was great seeing how the other characters lives were progressing too.

I'm going to miss these characters.

This is my absolute favorite book in the series thus far! Really! The give and take, push and pull… the sheer attraction between Lacey and Jake is simply phenomenal. True Divide is one of those books that leave you with a smile for the entirety of the read.

Lacey, I feel, isn’t sure about much except what she does. She loves her job and place in The Beauty Barn. She left town once, for college, but barely made it through the semester. She has resided to the fact this is kind of it for her.

A blast from the past, Jake, just showed up out of the blue; the clear blue sky that is. A pilot now, and the only guy Lacey ever really loved. His no nonsense, say-what’s-on-your-mind, straight talking, sexy self is back. The chemistry is stronger than ever.

It’s a wonderful second chance romance, and one I’m already excited to read again. Fun, smart and adorable!

Lacey Mosely loved Jake Holt back in their high school days. She was the popular cheerleader and he was the misfit. But she didn’t let that stop them from forming a relationship. He was the only one who ever really listened to her, and he was there when she needed him. The day of their graduation Jake left without a goodbye or any word at all. She was left heartbroken and confused by his disappearance and lack of contact.

Ten years later Lacey is still a resident of their hometown of Crowell with nothing to really call her own. The only thing in her life she really excels at and enjoys doing is working at The Beauty Barn. Her love life has been messy in the past and is currently nonexistent. Then one day, Jake comes into her life. This time he’s back as a different person. He’s nothing like she remembered physically or characteristically. Jake is now confident, blunt, and determined to reconnect with Lacey.

Now that Jake has a solid career he loves, he knows he can never permanently stay in the town that held him back.
But Lacey’s heart and soul is in Crowell and she can never imagine leaving.
The two have to make difficult decisions that’ll affect them both and determine their future as a couple.

All in all, this was my least favorite of the series. It wasn’t that it was terrible or poorly written, just didn’t have the same spark that the other two did.
I really loved seeing the way they reconnected. It wasn’t all make out sessions and lusty romps. There was a good majority of their reconnection that happened through emails and phone calls. I think that was a really important factor in their relationship, and always a good way to determine if the couple has lasting potential.
There was no doubt that Jake and Lacey had a strong connection and the chemistry was hot. I liked them as a couple, but it was more so Lacey’s character that didn’t appeal to me.

While Lacey was a relatable character, there were characteristics that really bothered me about her. She worried way too much about what others thought, she was quite insecure of herself altogether, and she overthought a lot of the time. For her age, she struck me as a bit fussy. The way she strung him along and gave up on him was also irritating.
Jake was a really sweet and dedicated man. He helped around the house as much as he could and enjoyed doing it and simply being there for Lacey. He was the most surprising character that won me over instantly.
The ending was a bit bland, especially since I was under the impression that this was the final book in the series. That being said, I wish there had at least been an epilogue to tie everything together.

This second chance romance about reconnecting with a high school sweetheart is humorous, emotional, and plenty sexy. A good book for fans of contemporary romance readers.

The love a man has for his wife

Here'a wonderful, basic story of heartfelt love. There was something about Ruby from the first day Jack saw her at the picnic table where all the migrant workers met before work. Ruby Pitt was a woman that bore her share of crosses.
This story follows Jack's love for his wife through their marriage, through Ruby's illness and beyond.
It's a sweet story that will pull at your heart strings and I have to say, it had me crying at one point til I couldn't see through the tears.
You will love Ruby and Jack. You'll want to take their hands and help them. And there are some characters that you just won't like at all! Some truely mean people.
This is a quick read and a very enjoyable, hard to put down book. I strongly recommend reading this book. It's just plain old fashioned love and tenderness between two good human beings and the struggles they endure.

A virtuous man, too

This is a story told in two voices.
One is Ruby's...kind,beautiful Ruby, who happens to be at the right place at the right time when she meets Jack Stokes. The opposite of her abusive, drinkin, womenizin first husband. Ruby tells us how Jack takes her away from all that dysfunction, promising her a decent life, caring for her, treating her like the lady she is.
Jack devotes himself completely to Ruby, gives his heart to her, showing his love in unique ways. For instance, buying her a mule!
He isn't the best looking man, or the smartest...but that was enough for Ruby.
Then there's Jack's voice. Jack is a man after my own heart. I couldn't help thinking...this book could have just as well been called, "A Virtuous Man"
40 yrs old when he sets eyes on Ruby sitting under a pecan tree...He says, "now that's a girl I could marry."
And after those eyes meet hers, nothing is the same. Everything afterwards begins and ends with Ruby.
I adored Jacks narrative, his kindness, the love he expressed to Ruby. After Ruby dies, the only thing keeping him going is wishing and hoping she comes back...laying next to him in bed, her skin touching his skin, smelling of lavender, and eating her usual dish of yogurt.
Gibbon's gives us other memorable characters also, like Little Fran, who is the devil dressed as a fat woman.
She gives up Mavis, who is hired when Ruby dies to help around the house but mostly helps herself to orange candy and soda and breaks the toilet seat.
I enjoyed the book, but the 4 star rating is for Jack. His voice makes the story much more interesting than it would have been otherwise.

Beautifully written, A Virtuous Women, is the quiet love story of Ruby Pitt Woodrow, daughter of a rich farmer, and Jack Stokes, a tenant farmer. At first they seem an unlikely match, Ruby, although 20 years younger than Jack, is already widowed, Jack, unattractive and unsuccessful, has never been married. But both have had tough lives. Ruby is alienated from her parents due to her brief marriage which was a disaster. She is working as a maid when she meets Jack. Jack has never had much, although his dream is to own a piece of land. Together they find, if not what they were looking for, a sense of completeness.

The book is written in first person narration with both Jack and Ruby narrating alternate chapters (except the last chapter which is written in the third person). This technique helps make both characters seem real. For me, personally, Jack was the character I most cared about, mostly because we know from the very beginning that Ruby dies and we see that Jack is lost without her.

"Jean-Baptiste Poquelin Moliere (1622-73), the French actor-manager and dramatist, was one of the theatre's greatest comic classics. Inspired by traditions of French farce and the 'commedia dell'arte', he courted controversy with his satiric commentaries on the society of his time and on eternal human foibles, but was saved by the patronage of the 'Sun King' Louis XIV. Born in Manchester in 1959, Ranjit Bolt was educated at Perse School and at Balliol College, Oxford. He worked as an investment analyst and advisor for eight years, before concentrating on theatre translation from the end of 1990. Ranjit Bolt's acclaimed translations for the theatre, many of which are published by Oberon Books, include works by Moliere, Seneca, Sophocles, Corneille, Beaumarchais, Brecht, Goldoni and Zorilla."

About the Author

David Willoughby is a graduate of Lebanon Valley College (Pennsylvania), Miami University (Ohio), and the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester (New York). He is Professor Emeritus of Music at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU), where he taught for 20 years while serving as dean of the School of Music and then of the College of Fine Arts. Following his retirement in 1993, Willoughby moved to Pennsylvania and became head of the Music Department at Susquehanna University.

Willoughby has long been active in the College Music Society (CMS), a national organization of music teachers in higher education. His leadership roles with CMS have included board member for Music in General Studies (MGS), director of the 1981 Wingspread Conference for Music in General Studies and of four subsequent MGS summer teacher institutes, President (1987 and 1988), and Editor of the CMS Newsletter (1997-2006).

Throughout his career, Willoughby has played bass in symphony orchestras in Pennsylvania and New Mexico, as well as jazz bass with a wide variety of groups.

During his years at ENMU, he hosted a weekly music and talk radio program that explored music and musicians from diverse periods, styles, and cultures. Those one-hour programs, presented on public radio in New Mexico, created a foundation that expanded Willoughby’s world of music and established the philosophy for his music appreciation textbook, The World of Music, first published in 1990.

David Willoughby and his wife, Barbara English Maris, live in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, with Taffy, their very special maltese/poodle.

I hated every minute of it

I had to use this book to teach my music appreciation class because it needed to be standardized across the sections, and I hated every minute of it. It's incredibly poorly organized, both in overall structure and within the chapters. It manages to be miraculously too specific and too vague about many of its topics, and it's not an accessible language.

My biggest problem with the book is that you can't teach from it. I'm a classical music guy, and teaching jazz and world music, I literally had to do outside research on every single topic. I would read the chapter and know nothing of any substance more about the music. On the bright side, I ended up learning a lot about these topics (from other sources) but it was incredibly frustrating.

Rented the book with 3 cd's from Apex_Media. It did indeed come with the cd's and the book was gently used. CD's in excellent condition. The book itself was a little hard to follow, but was required for my class and did it's job. Great rental company, standard book.

The Still Collections Are Still Collecting

I recently investigated Jack Flam's huge Robert Motherwell project (Catalogue Raisonne) and began to wonder if there could be something like this for Clyfford Still - not yet. Separate monographs will have to do for now. Each of the books (Buffalo/SF, Denver) are attractive yet incomplete. I prefer the writing in the Buffalo / SF Collections, however the introduction to the Denver collection is excellent, while Anfam's is chatty and "poetic". Both of these books offer some very interesting insights to Still's odd genius fixations (especially Landauer).

Good visuals of early work as well as mature work. I now want to go to the museum. Learned that Still was his own man and he didn't cave into the gallery system.

Great Book!

Excellent visuals and an enjoyable read. Some of Still's paintings are almost as difficult to reproduce in photographs as Ad Reinhardt, but they've done a good job in picking up on the subtle nuances. Well worth the price.
