Rippon uses the Blackdown Hills in southern England, which marked an important boundary in landscape character from prehistory onwards, as a specific case study to be applied as a model for other landscape areas. Even today the fields, place-names, and styles of domestic architecture are very different either side of the Blackdown Hills, and it is suggested that these differences in landscape character developed because of deep-rooted differences in the nature of society that are found right across southern England. Although focused on the more recent past, the volume also explores the medieval, Roman, and prehistoric periods.

Challenging Without Being Overly Difficult; Good Balance

I've read an awful lot of science fiction over the years, and recently returned to the genre after a lengthy absence. In doing so, I made a concerted effort to upgrade my reading list and familiarize myself with the new generation of sci-fi writers. My recent experience has been a real revelation. Whereas in the past, most of the science fiction I consumed was very easy to read and understand (Asimov as an example), some of the works I've sampled in the last year or two have quite literally been over my head.

I read Dune (multiple times) many years ago. I proceeded on to the Dune sequels, but after two or three they became so philosophically dense that I lost interest. I recently read Herbert's widely acknowledged masterpiece The Dosadi Experiment and again was forced to admit that I was incapable of appreciating it fully. Ditto for much of Philip Dick's writing.

In an effort to read all joint Hugo/Nebula Award winners, I ran into a few other such works. Some of the new generation of sci-fi writers have published undeniably outstanding novels that I simply couldn't enjoy fully. Charles Stross, Neal Stephenson and Ian McDonald come immediately to mind. These cats are just too intelligent for me to relate to (and I have a post graduate degree!).

Others, such as Joe Scalzi, David Brin and Joe Haldeman crank out easily understood and entertaining work (in the mode of Asimov), but without all the heavy lifting some of the previously cited authors require. All of this to say, that in Peter Hamilton's The Reality Dysfunction I discovered what I felt was a very happy medium: Vastly entertaining, but with just the level of challenge and difficulty that I could master without detracting from my enjoyment of the reading experience. There are some pretty heavy concepts in this novel, yet I never felt that I was lost or over my head. Outstanding example of "hard" science fiction.

One of my science fiction pet peeves are hackneyed alien life forms. Multi armed/legged creatures, insect or other animal like beings, as if alien life forms have to fit into human constructs. Larry Niven's Ringworld is a perfect example (giant cats and Pierson's Puppets). While this novel has some of that, it also has some very intriguing alien life forms which do not fit neatly into our preconceived notions of how an alien may look or behave. It also includes sentient habitats and spaceships, a concept I first encountered in Charles Stross's Saturn's Children.

At over 1,000 pages, and only the first of three books in a series, this is an undertaking that requires a significant time commitment. There are also a dizzying number of plot threads which could be hard to keep straight.
Not the kind of book that you read for a while, put aside and take up again a few weeks later. However, if you're up to the challenge, I don't think you'll be disappointed. On to book two.

3,600 PAGES OF SCI FI AWESOMENESS!!

Peter Hamilton’s “Night’s Dawn” trilogy is an epic space opera of unrivaled proportions. I’ve been reading science fiction for over 50 years and this is the richest and most fascinating trilogy that I have ever encountered. Hamilton is a meticulous author whose descriptions of his universe are so detailed and textured that you feel like you’re watching a movie. Plus, it’s one of the best bargains ever! For the price of three books – “The Reality Dysfunction”, “The Neutronium Alchemist” and “The Naked God” - you get over 3,600 pages of action – the equivalent of nine to twelve normal novels. With most trilogies, I find I’ve started to grow tired of the story before the last novel is complete. Not so with these books. After days of enjoyable reading, my only complaint is that the story did not continue. Yet, it ended with one of the most satisfying conclusions I’ve ever encountered. I cannot recommend these books highly enough!

About the Author

CRAIG SAGER (1951-2016) was an Emmy Award-winning broadcaster for Turner Sports who became synonymous with the NBA over his more than four decades on air. He has also reported on MLB, the NFL, college football, twelve Olympic Games, the PGA Tour, Wimbledon, the World Cup, the Goodwill Games, and horse racing for TNT, CNN, CBS, and NBC.

CRAIG SAGER II is a managing editor and sportswriter based in Atlanta covering high school sports as well as working with the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Atlanta Falcons. Sager graduated from the University of Georgia where he participated as a walk-on football player.

BRIAN CURTIS is a New York Times bestselling author who has contributed to Sports Illustrated. He is the author or coauthor of six books including Fields of Battle: Pearl Harbor, the Rose Bowl, and the Boys who Went to War and Go Long!: My Journey Beyond the Game and the Fame (with Jerry Rice). A Candid Look at Leukemia

For years I have volunteered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It wasn't until reading Living Out Loud that I understood what Leukemia is, the treatment process and what those who have it truly go through. Craig Sager takes you along on a journey that I hope no one has to go on. He is very open and honest with all of his treatments and it leaves the reader exhausted. After all he endured, I was amazed at his continued positive outlook and incredible energy. Craig Sager may be long remembered by most for his fashion sense but I will remember him (and be inspired) by his utter will to fight as long as he did. I loved how a family perspective was presented throughout the book because God knows families are suffering along with the patient -- kudos Craig Junior!!! Living Out Loud is more than a book about one man's battle with a dreaded disease, it also serves as a life motivator and a father/son journey.

If you are the beginner of QFT, then I would recommend you two books: Das and Peskin. The one written by Peskin is practical and concise, whereas this one is comprehensive and well organized. You can fill up the gaps in Peskin by finding answers from this book. Highly recommend.

Complete and easy to follow.

This is the book you should read after an undergrad study of quantum mechanics (a previous knowledge of undergrad particle physics helps with some examples, but it's not required). It walks you through Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, introducing the second quantization concept in a very intuitive and practical way. It goes all the way till renormalization group, and most of the calculations are carried in a precise manner, so it's very easy to deal with them. A must have book, one that everyone should read before specializing in their fields.

Incredible! Was Stephen Covey in MLM?!

I have read 7 habits of highly effective people and one day while browsing the kindle books I found this little gem. I still am not sure if Stephen Covey has ever ventured into network marketing before, but he seems to know A LOT about it.

This book is not very long, but it has 7 fantastic points about certain areas you need to be diligent in to be successful in our industry. A powerful and fast read.

This book gives you the essentials of network marketing. Techniques are not explained here, but the mindset to win. I find this more valuable than any skill because it teaches marketers to develop a strong mental foundation. The book is to the point and easy to read. For someone who is pressed for time can definitely benefit from this book.

Improved my skin!

This formula is clear and watery, but it absorbs very quickly and you only need a small amount to cover your entire face. I noticed significant imrovement in the appearance of my skin while using this product - i normally have dull, tired looking skin, but this serum gave me a glow that lasted all day. Definitely worth the money. I would recommend this product to friends.
