The brilliancy of a masterful teacher...

This is perhaps my favorite of any divination tool Ted Andrews has produced. It contains 40 "animal runes" in a faux silk bag and accompanying book. Of all his work that has been produced in China, this has the best quality I've seen to date.

The messages are clear and precise. To this point, they have been right on the money. His book descriptions are not merely copy and paste from his Animal Speak book, which is a great accompaniment to these runes and adds depth to the included book.

Ted states in the beginning of the accompanying book that these are not traditional runes, so if anyone wants to argue that they are not, that is all well and good. They serve the purpose they were intended for. I've never used runes of any kind, so I can't make a judgment one way or the other if they are truly "runes." I'm just happy to use them for what I'm seeking.

On October 24, 2009 Ted left this world. I had an opportunity to see him teach and meet with him when he was back home here in Dayton a couple of years ago. He was a great teacher and had a zest for life that I have rarely encountered in my time here. He certainly was one of a kind and his legacy will live on through his work.

Superb rune-like system

Animal-Speak Runes is an oracle system based on animal archetypes by Ted Andrews. Instead the classic Nordic Runes on wooden tiles, these show inked figures of animals with names and key words. However, this departure from the standard oracle card systems makes these runes very fascinating.

The runes in this oracle are small (0.75"x1.25") with rounded corners. I'm actually surprised of their good quality! Each wooden tile contains an inked animal figure set in the middle with its name at the bottom and a key word at the top. This arrangement reminds me of oracle and tarot cards. Of course, unlike cards, these can be easily held in your hands and hidden inside your fist.

This system includes 40 wooden tiles, divided into 34 animals and 6 specialty tiles.
The six specialty tiles refer to actions that animals undertake: camouflage, hibernation, hunting, mating, metamorphosis, and migration. The 34 animals include 12 mammals (bear, coyote, deer, dolphin, fox, horse, jaguar, manatee, rabbit, rat, skunk, and wolf), 10 birds (blue jay, crane, eagle, hawk, hummingbird, owl, raven, swan, vulture, and woodpecker), 6 reptiles (chameleon, crocodile, frog, gecko, snake, and turtle), and 6 bugs (bee, butterfly, cicada, dragonfly, praying mantis, and spider).

This kit include a red bag and a pocket sized guidebook. The bag is imitation silk, according to a very generous description in the guidebook. It has two pull-strings to close it shut, and strong stitching. It does not have an inner liner, but is still adequate to carry and mix your animals tiles.

The guidebook is an essential addition to this kit. Although the tiles are well labeled, I welcome the information in this pocket book.

Chapter 4 Animal Runes
Chapter 5 Special Rune Readings

Chapter 1 explains the concept of animals as messengers from nature, while chapter 2 shows a quick way to start using the runes. Chapter 3 and 4 fleshes out each rune standard and reverse meaning. Finally, chapter 5 shows a few layouts for divination and meditation: Daily Oracle (1 rune layout), Three Rune Prophecy, The Yearly Forecast (13 runes layout), and Your Spiritual Journey (10 runes layout).

I own three gorgeous animal themed Tarots, and two other rune/tile based oracles besides this one. However, if I were considering buying just one for among these six for divination and meditation, this one would be in a tie with my best animal themed Tarot.

This is an easy-to-pick-up oracle system for anyone, but I highly recommend this oracle for practitioners of shamanism. And no collector of oracle system should let this one pass.

Animal speak runes

These are fun, accurate and easy to understand. If you like animals and divination these are for you! I am so glad to have these. Ted Andrews was a very informative and intuitive individual and anything by him is worth reading and using. If you enjoy runes in a softer way then buy these. There is only one issue with these runes...eventually the picture side starts to wear off...I have had them for 8 months and the pictures are wearing thin..

Analysis of The Common Place of Law

The Common Place of Law, by Ewick and Silbey, asserts that law exists autonomous from while being constitutive of daily life, with legality defined at one point as a social structure actively and constantly produced in what people say and do (however it must be noted that the others give other definitions of legality later in the book). Based on this conception, the authors interviewed a random sample of 430 adults in New Jersey to gain insights into their interactions, finding that people act before, with, or against the law. While this analysis brings forward interesting issues, it left many questions.

First, there are basic questions regarding methodology. A random sample that only takes into account adults in New Jersey may not get a wide range of people's experiences with the law given that New Jersey has different laws, methods of judicial administration, and enforcement policies than other states. A further methodological issue concerns the fact that the interviews took 2-3 hours, eliminating those who do not have that much free time.

Second, the authors left the reification issue partially unexplained. They assert that individuals construct meanings that, once institutionalized, become part of the systems that constrain future meaning making; when these ideas are constructed, how long do they take to reify, and how do they change after reification? Further, because Ewick and Silbey's theory allows for schemas to change with the introduction of new information, can reification, which by definition concerns treating something as a concrete entity, ever really occur? A schema is undoubtedly difficult to change, but it is not impossible to change, thus perhaps reification is not the proper term given the challenge at hand.

Third, the idea of law being autonomous from while at the same time constitutive of everyday life is afflicted by the problem of dualism--if there is a duality between that which affects and that which is affected, then how are the two mediated? In other words, if law is both particular and general, then how is the particularity linked to the generality? Rather than a duality, perhaps the authors could argue for a unity in which all things coexist, thus each is able to influence the other.

Fourth, more information on how societal schemas change over time would be helpful. If schemas can be changed by new information, how is this new information accepted, and why are some pieces of new information accepted while others are not? Using the authors' example of witchcraft, why is it that Americans by and large no longer subscribe to paganism, while in some areas it is still practiced? Some schemas must be more rigid than others, but why is this especially given the fact that the same information is available to most everyone?

In summary, the authors brought forward some interesting points, but further explanation would be enlightening.

An excellent, meticulously researched book.

The richness of this book comes from four hundred thirty interviews that support the text. The gist of the book is that people have three takes on the law: before the law, against the law, and with the law.
"Before the law" is an attitude of awe and respect for the institution. Faith in that day in court, that statue of blind justice and the policeman is my friend. "Against the law" is an attitude of resistance to the institution. Law as a caprice of the powerful, and resistance the right way to deal with it. "With the law" is an attitude of game playing with the institution. I didn't make the rules, but me and my lawyer, we sure as hell will play the game. People shift and change among these modes depending on where they are in life, the particulars of the situation, and growing experience with the law.
The biggest contribution of this book is in highlighting the game playing aspect of dealing with law. I think game-playing gets short shrift from other law authors who may be stuck inside their very serious institution. Most other books reduce game-playing to simple economic theory and don't pay enough attention to the human side of gaming with the law. I mean, really. Just look at how big the sports section of the Sunday paper is versus the economic analysis section! Games are a big part of everyday life. Ewick & Silbey give game-playing the appropriate type of attention. Big bravo.
My only criticism is that the language of this book is mainly for an academic audience, and thus I give it only four stars-sorry. The writing could be de-academicized and made more powerful and popular. Overall it is an excellent, meticulously researched book
I got the book for its cover-the picture of chairs in newly shoveled parking space. Now that's a real hotbed of attitude in the informal/formal law divide. Thanks to the authors and worker-bees for all their work.

About the Author
Martin Ives, MBA, CPA, CGFM, CIA, serves as the Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Public Administration at New York University's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Before entering the academic world, Ives was Vice Chair and Director of Research of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board, a member of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board, First Deputy Comptroller of the City of New York, and Deputy Comptroller of the State of New York. In addition to this text, Professor Ives has co-authored three books (Program Control and Audit, Financial Condition Analysis and Management, and Government Performance Audit in Action). He has also written chapters for audit and municipal finance handbooks, has authored more than 25 articles for the Government Accountants Journal, the Journal of Accountancy, the Internal Auditor, and other professional journals. In addition, he has spoken to numerous professional and civic organizations. He was founding president of the Albany chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors and served on the governing boards of several other professional organizations. Ives has received many honors and awards including the Public Service Award (Fund for the City of New York), the Governor Charles Evans Hughes Award (Capitol District chapter of the American Society for Public Administration), and the S. Kenneth Howard Award (Association for Budgeting and Financial Management). He has also been voted Adjunct of the Year by the students at NYU's Wagner Graduate School. Joseph R. Razek, Ph.D., CPA (inactive), CGFM, is the Energy Accounting and Tax Conference Professor of Accounting at the University of New Orleans. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, he received his master's of business administration from the University of Michigan and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. He is a certified public accountant and a certified government financial manager and has consulted for many governmental and not-for-profit organizations. Dr. Razek has published articles in the Accounting Review, Government Accountants Journal, Accounting Historians Journal, Nonprofit World and other professional journals. He has also co-authored many chapters in governmental accounting handbooks, as well as a textbook on managerial accounting. Cited by his students as a dedicated and innovative teacher, Dr. Razek has received several teaching awards. He currently teaches courses in governmental and not-for-profit accounting and health care accounting at both the graduate and undergraduate level and is a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs Health Care Task Force. Gordon A. Hosch, Ph.D., CPA, CGFM, received his bachelor's degree from the University of New Orleans, a master's degree from the University of Arkansas, and his doctorate in accounting from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He has served as chairman of the Department of Accountancy and is currently the KPMG Professor of Accounting and Graduate Programs Coordinator in Accounting at the University of New Orleans. He has public accounting experience with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. (now KPMG) and has served as a faculty intern with the Department of Agriculture's National Finance Center. Dr. Hosch is a member of the Louisiana Society of CPAs Governmental Accounting and Auditing Committee. He has made presentations to various organizations including the American Society of Women Accountants, the American Software Users Group, the U.S. Navy, and the Internal Revenue Service. He received the Educator of the Year Award from the Louisiana Society of CPAs as well as numerous teaching awards, including the University of New Orleans College of Business Outstanding Alumnus Award. WHat can I say except that it was a necessity. The way the book is laid out is logical and builds upon each chapter. You can easily reference something by looking at index or even the table of contents. Book was in great condition from seller.

Item was as described. It is used but in like new condition. My prof decided to use a different text book at the last minute, but this one was only about $15 so it was not a huge loss. It still has a lot of usable information.

Marc Sabatella is a pianist, composer, educator, and software developer based in Denver, Colorado (USA). As a pianist and composer, he performs regularly and has released several CD's of his own as well appearing on and contributing compositions to a number of recordings by others. He is the composer of Reunion, the demo song featured with MuseScore 1.3 and earlier releases, and he has worked as an arranger and editor for a number of very popular fakebooks for jazz, blues, and rock. As an educator, he teaches at the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, and he has written two previous books: A Whole Approach To Jazz Improvisation and The Harmonic Language of Jazz Standards. He is also known worldwide as the author of the free online work, A Jazz Improvisation Primer. As a software developer, he contributed many features, improvements, and bug fixes to MuseScore 2.0. A very worthwhile companion to an excellent program

MuseScore 2 has powerful capabilities and an elegant user interface. It produces the beautiful results it promises, and, most amazingly, it's freely downloadable – thanks to the tireless devotion of an awe-inspiring team of developers who devote incalculable amounts of time and energy pursuing their passion for this project.

Any outstanding piece of software deserves a worthy manual that's comprehensive, well written, well organized and easy to follow. Optimally, it can serve as both a how-to guide and a handy reference tool. That's what 'Mastering MuseScore' is, and that's what it does.

I've studied classical piano – and been happily immersed in the wonderful world of musical notation – since early childhood. My personal experience with MuseScore is that of an avid daily user for nearly six years, going back to version 0.9.5. I've embraced this brilliant endeavor wholeheartedly, and I can now recommend 'Mastering MuseScore' with equal enthusiasm. For all those who wish to understand MuseScore 2 and to use it skillfully, this book is a great complement to a great program.

Music notation made easy. (Corrected -- see comments.)

Music notation programs are by necessity fairly complex. MuseScore is a user supported program that directly competes with some rather expensive professional products. My needs were such that paying for and keeping a commercial product current was not a viable option. I discovered MuseScore in its earlier 1.x version and was immensely pleased with the upgrade to 2.x. The old documentation was so-so (for version 1.x) but barely adequate. (It could be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF.) Note: I did have some previous experience with a commercial notation program about a decade back... but keeping it current (as the computer OS was upgraded) was not cost effective for my needs.)

Version 2 of MuseScore is a much more polished program. The online instructions/reference manual are far more polished than the 1.x version... it is accessed through a browser -- and can be downloaded as a PDF. The online reference manual is a bit terse at times, making it necessary to experiment a bit to "get" how a feature works.

The book is a well thought out explanation of the program -- it's independently produced and has about double the page count of the online instructions. It has numerous screen grabs as illustrations. (Minor gripe is that they're from a Windows computer and look clunky compared to the windows on a Mac.) Each chapter had a brief chart of the functions (and related commands) covered therein. Obviously with a book, you can place sticky notes -- and even keep a couple of fingers in the book so you can flip back and forth between relevant sections as you work on a notation project. (Once you're more experienced with the program, the need to have the reference manual at had will be reduced -- but there are many features that one might not encounter frequently, and having a reference manual is a big help

The disappointment in the book Mastering Musescore couldn't have been greater ...

I am working with the program for about 8 to 9 months, mostly with the help of the online manual which can be downloaded. The disappointment in the book Mastering Musescore couldn't have been greater because of the font which is used. The text is very thin, the space between the characters and between the lines as well is very small which makes reading for me too difficult. Apart from this readability issue I didn't find one item which I couldn't find in the online or downloaded manual so to be honest I cannot understand the 5 star rating of the book. Which does not make the book useless, of course. A rating of 5 stars means the extra ordinary quality of the material (media AND content offered), in other words: when you have a certain question, what then would be the first source which comes up in your mind? Nine times out of ten I'd favour the manual. Mastering Musescore would be the second.

Convenient Copies of Local History Books

I jumped at the opportunity to get both books by WC Allen on CD. I have an original copy of Annals and after being used for 79 years, it is becoming pretty fragile. Now I can use the CD and let the book become a keepsake. The CD is much cheaper, too.

The Princess Bride is a true fantasy classic. William Goldman describes it as a "good parts version" of "S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure." Morgenstern's original was filled with details of Florinese history, court etiquette, and Mrs. Morgenstern's mostly complimentary views of the text. Much admired by academics, the "Classic Tale" nonetheless obscured what Mr. Goldman feels is a story that has everything: "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Believe it or not, my future husband used this book to win my hand. I think giving it to me as a gift was his way of proving that he is a hopeless romantic, since the book is so wonderfully hopelessly romantic. So far, he's lived up to it! If you've only seen the movie, but love it, then you should definitely read the book. Also look for the 25th Anniversary (yes, it's really been that long) edition this Christmas--it includes the first chapter of the forthcoming sequel, Buttercup's Baby.

A Must Read for every Princess Bride Fan

I've grown up watching the movie roughly 396 times a year and will always deem it as my all-time most favorite movie ever. So naturally, when I found out that the movie was actually based on a novel, I had to have it. My biggest fear was that it would be a watered down version of the movie with less humor and wit, or that the movie took the best parts and the book would be mostly unsatisfying filler with the occasional recognizable humor. I couldn't have been more wrong.

I daresay the book has even more humor and more wit than the film adaptation. William Goldman's story telling is pure genius, writing from a satirical 1st person perspective of how he created an abridged version of an old non-fictional book from a fictional country written by a fictional author. As you read through the "abridged version" you will frequently stumble across familiar lines you've come to love from the film ("INCONCEIVABLE!") but with slight variations in certain parts (ex. a more detailed story of how Wesley and Buttercup fall in love on the farm), and often times even more brilliant substance added to classic scenes you already love (Prince Humperdink's Zoo of Death).

You also gain a better understanding of the film and why certain scenes play out the way that they do, such as why Inigo drunkenly yells out to Vizzini that he's going "back to the beginning" and the backstories to both Inigo and Fezzik beginning from childhood.

After reading the book you'll have a newfound appreciation for the movie which you'll see is a fantastic adaptation, and you'll have a fantastic time wrapped around Goldman's hilarious finger as he guides you through a truly wonderful story that feels exactly like the timeless classic we've enjoyed watching for years.

If you've never seen the movies, you'll like the book. If you've seen the movie a million times like I have, you'll LOVE the book. It's truly a must have for every Princess Bride fan. You won't be disappointed.

This isn't usually the sort of book I read but I was pleasantly surprised. I read William Goldman's book "Which Lie Did I Tell" some years ago. It's his followup to "Adventures in the Screen Trade." In it he says that Princess Bride was one of the favorite things he wrote. I saw the movie years ago and liked it but never even knew it was a novel, much less the adaptation of a classic story by "S. Morgenstern."

It isn't, of course, and that's what makes this so much more than just a whimsical fairy tale. The author's first-person introduction in which he probably fools some readers about this and mixes all sorts of true and fictional details about his own life (making up a son and wife, for example) are a bit weird but entertaining. It took me about 15 or 20 pages to catch on - the part where he writes about flying to "Florin."

Anyway, the underlying story (the same one as in the movie) is great, but the wrapper is awfully good too.

True love—for a book

Years ago, I was asked one of those silly questions that readers ask each other: “If you could be any literary character, who would you be?” Without hesitation, I replied, “Princess Buttercup.” After all, what woman in her right mind wouldn’t crave a life of true love and high adventure?

I have no recollection of when I first read William Goldman’s beloved novel, but I can tell you that in the decades since, I’ve read the book and seen the film at least a dozen times. It is very high on my list of all-time favorites. I never grow tired of it. I can pick this book up and start reading on any page and get sucked in immediately. And as soon as I’ve finished it, I could easily start reading from page one all over again. It is a case of true love.

Now, you have to have been living under a rock for the past few decades not to have an idea of what this tale is about. It’s the story of the beautiful milkmaid Buttercup and her love for the dashing farm boy Westley and all they go through in order to be together. Additionally, the novel uses the author’s life as a framing device. In what is purported to be a series of forwards and abridger’s notes, Goldman reflects on his personal history with “S. Morgenstern’s Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure.” He speaks candidly (and entirely fictitiously) of his family life, and perhaps somewhat less fictitiously of his professional life. And he tells the story of how his father first read him the tale when he was ten years old. When he asked if there were any sports in the book, the man replied:

“Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad men. Good men. Beautiful ladies. Snakes. Spiders. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Brave men. Coward men. Strongest men. Chases. Escapes. Lies. Truths. Passion. Miracles.”

I ask you, what more could a reader possibly want?

The one thing Goldman forgot to list is humor. What has made this tale such a classic, in addition to the fact that it contains one of the five greatest kisses of all time, is the novel’s adroit humor. It ranges from sophisticated to glib to farcical, and it never fails to make me smile. Because of the brilliant film adaptation (also written by Goldman), many of the novel’s lines and passages have become cultural touchstones. Have you ever cried, “Inconceivable!” in a Wally Shawn lisp? Mandy Patinkin doesn’t go a day without someone coming up to him and proclaiming, “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!” Does the phrase “As you wish.” just give you chills? These characters are indelible, and Mr. Goldman’s humor has held up for 40 years. I believe people still be chuckling over this novel a hundred years from now. Shakespeare, Jane Austen, P.G. Wodehouse—some humor is simply timeless.

Clearly, I love a feel-good story, but most suffer from diminishing returns. Maybe it was awesome the first time you read it, pretty good the second, and less so on successive reads. Not so, The Princess Bride. If anything, I think my considerable affection for this novel grows with each successive reading. And I’m still spotting new things! On this read, for the first time, I spotted the fake blurbs at the front of the Kindle edition. (One was from “Shog Bongiorno, professor emeritus, Mid-European Literature, Columbia University,” LOL.)

Twenty-fifth and thirtieth anniversary editions of The Princess Bride have contained new forwards that continue the story that Goldman uses as the novel’s framing device. And after the novel’s end, there is a lengthy introduction to a substantial sample of the novel’s fictitious sequel, Buttercup’s Baby. I’ve read it all except for Buttercup’s Baby. I can only read that for the first time once, and I’m just not ready to experience it yet. Besides, maybe one day Mr. Goldman will elbow out Stephen King for the job and will finish the abridgement of the sequel. Hope springs eternal. And isn’t that the nature of true love?
