Accessible and informative.

I bought this book as a gift for a recent amputee and had a browse before giving it. I confess I've not read the entire book, but what I have seen was a comprehensive guide for amputees, their friends, family or carers.
It is aimed at an audience without a medical background, and attempts to provide a broad overview of all that follows the loss of a limb, including prosthetics. The language is not overly technical, and provides very helpful information about the recovery process.

Great Resource

I bought this book for my dad because he had his leg amputated recently. He said he really has learned a lot from it about his situation and recovery and the book even allowed him to learn about and choose the type of prothesis he needs. His doctor even wrote down the name of the book!

Get the audio book!!
Oh, give me a break, what a wonderful performance by Marty, and that's no lie. Can I call him Marty? I suppose if we were best friends, I could call him Marty. Oh and I suppose that would ever happen! This book made me completely mental, I was so sad when the book finished and there was nothing more to listen to, it was similar to a pain that may linger, I must say.
Seriously though, Martin Short reads this and he goes into character many times throughout the book, that is why the audio book would be better. I'm sure the printed version is funny, but the audio version must be funnier.

Thanks for Remembering!

Martin Short is comprised of the funniest stuff in our solar system. The book reads marvelously, like he's sitting next to you telling all of these fantastic show biz anecdotes. My favorite part is the insider report from SCTV, just the best comedy show ever. He explains how his characters came to be - a laugh from this person, a voice from that one, a soup�on of Old Hollywood, et voil�! Genius.

Somehow I knew going in that he lost his wife, Nancy. This would be difficult for anyone, but the prospect of Short being sad is almost as sad as Ed Grimley being sad. But the way he weaves her quips and attitude throughout I Must Say shows the reader that she's still very present, that as long as he's here, she's here as well.

Even in the sadness there's an undercurrent of joy that comes through. Short and his long-time friends - like his SCTV alums, or Paul Schaffer, Tom Hanks, and Steve Martin, - seem a happy, even at times goofball, troupe going through life, laughing and making each other laugh. A really nice read.

Hilarious "Short" memoir!

Mostly hilarious, but with touches of real life pathos, this is the biography of one of Hollywood's funniest men, and kid from the Great White North who made it big (I love his film in the Canada pavilion @ Epcot).

Martin goes into some depth about his creation process for some of his characters such as Ed Grimley, Nathan Thurm, Jiminy Glick. And it's "not all about me" as he talks freely about his co-stars such as Steve Martin, Gilda Radner, Mel Brooks, Nora Ephron,Tom Hanks, Paul Shaffer, and David Letterman. However, this is more than just the usual show biz name dropping, he has humorous anecdotes to share. I thought these were some of the best parts.

Martins life isn't all beer and poutine however, he also tells about how he lost his parents at a early age and recently his wife.

This may be one of the funniest memoirs I have read since Bob Hope.

Author/Illustrator's own plug...

This book is an offshoot of my studies of the Urban Fairy Doors of Ann Arbor, MIchigan. I leave journal/guestbooks at various locations which have fairy doors and invite visitors to write and/or draw in them. Of the course of my investigations into the fairy doors I have been asked if I have ever seen a fairy. To the best of my knowledge and recollection, I have not. HOWEVER, many children HAVE claimed to have seen fairies. Many of these children (and a few adults) have actually drawn images of their sightings in m journal/guestbooks. I used their ability to see combined with my ability to illustrate to create "Who's Behind the Fairy Doors?". Inside the book you will find copies of the original illustrations and on the opposite pages, my interpretations, which I hope will give a cleared vision into the likenesses of some of the urban fairies.

Along with being a finalist and winner in four categories, "Who's Behind the Fairy Doors?" also was named the Third Place Grand Prize Winner in the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. This book was an Award-Winning Finalist in the "Children's Novelty & Gift Books" category of the National Best Books 2007 Awards. AND... an Ann Arbor News #1 Best Seller.

Urban fairies of Ann Arbor, wonderfully illustrated!

This charming book will delight any lover of fairies, especially those who live in or near Ann Arbor, Michigan, where the urban fairy doors have captivated children and adults alike years! The author, a certified fairyologist, who "discovered" these doors, illustrates the real fairies, based on children's drawings of their own fairy sightings. A wonderfully creative book!

I love the whole idea of Fairy Doors

I love the whole idea of Fairy Doors. The author took scribbles of other people (mostly children) inspired by the fairies they saw and e made them come to life in funny ways. I really appreciate the collaborative effort of the book.

If you want in-depth info about the Balinese....

Though this book was originally published over a decade ago, it remains the best source in English for learning about the Balinese through their rituals, daily life, and cosmology. It is not casual reading, but it is also not academic, because Eiseman has such love and interest in the Balinese themselves, not just Bali as a 'paradise for tourists.'

As one reviewer said, "he has produced the most detailed descriptions yet of most aspects of Balinese life and culture. He lives down in Jimbaran on the south coast, so many of his descriptions relate particularly to that area - practices change a bit in different places. He understands the Balinese language, which is not the case with many academics, who visit Bali briefly and write learned treatises, and don't always get it right."

The Sekala and Niskala are ways of saying 'the seen and the unseen," the outward appearances of things and all the symbolic, or mystical, or ritual meanings of all the things he describes. The book is not a tourist guide to places--it's a guide to what makes Bali the fascinating place it is beyond the beaches, massages, and spas. I didn't read it until after I'd come to Bali; but a friend read it before coming and said it really helped him understand some of the things he saw. So either can work--I carry it around on my Kindle and refer to it often.

I would recommend this book to people who find the Bali life around them fascinating and want to know the 'why' of so many aspects of it. From ceremonies to masks to why garbage is placed in a certain part of the house compound, he provides the answers. Because the book is essays you can go to any chapter and not feel like you should have started at the beginning.

Wonderful Book

During a recent visit to Bali, I became fascinated with the practice of Hinduism there and how it influences every aspect of daily life. I recorded my guide's explanations as we went along, but I wanted to learn much more. This book, based on first hand experience, has provided all I was looking for and more. If you are interested in world religions and Balinese culture in particular, I can't say enough good things about this book. Unfortunately, the author passed away in 2013. I would have loved to correspond with him.
