Gregory A. Boyd (Ph.D., Princeton Theological Seminary) is the senior pastor at Woodland Hills Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, and formerly served as professor of theology at Bethel University. Paul R. Eddy (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of biblical and theological studies at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Boyd and Eddy are coauthors of The Jesus Legend.

A refreshingly objective approach to theological issues.

I have read through this book once and fully intend to read it again soon. The authors cover many of the main theological issues facing the church. I found the approach of the authors to be refreshingly objective. In fact, I honestly can't remember reading a book that manages to give both sides to argument in such a rational and objective way.

The authors have managed to cover so many different topics that there is, of course, a limit to the depth to which each topic can be covered. If you feel passionate about a particular view point, then you may feel that the argument supporting that view wasn't sufficiently strong. I was certainly left wanting more at the end of each chapter. However, the book would have to be way longer, or only cover half the subjects, if a more in-depth approach was taken. However, it would be unfair to suggest that the book was light on content, theology or rational arguments, because it isn't. It packs a surprising amount of content into each chapter using scripture, church history, and reasoning to explain each side, or sides, of the debate.

It hasn't changed any of my main views, but it has helped to open my mind. I am sure the same would be true for those of opposing viewpoints. However, it has helped me to understand why people believe otherwise and the reasoning behind their convictions. In some cases it has strengthened what I believe, and in other cases it has helped me to understand that the opposing viewpoints should at least be given some consideration. The book has the potential to help Christians of different theological persuasions to communicate in a more reasoned manner.

If you are overly dogmatic, then you will not enjoy reading this book. I personally found it very enjoyable and would recommend it to any Christian seeking a better understanding of what they believe and why.

The most unbiased review of "hot button" theological issues that I have ever read.

A good unbiased review of differing perspectives relating to theological principles within evangelical denominations. Covers a wide range of "hot button" issues. Details the various viewpoints from a biblical perspective with supporting scripture. Includes objections to each position including responses to those objections. This is a very well written book that does not culminate with any specific conclusions as to a "correct" understanding of the theological principle being discussed, almost to the point that the reader doesn't really know which position the authors take, if any. They simply lay out an explanation of each position together with supporting evidence.

A very good read so far

I've only read the first two chapters on my Kindle, but i wanted to provide some feedback now and will add more after i've finished reading the book.

Over the years i have encountered terms and ideas within the faith that i really haven't understood and asking for help from pastors hasn't really resolved them for me. I've also found that pastors and church study groups have tended to avoid developing even a simple theological understanding of scripture. The books i've read so far haven't, until now, really focused on key ideas as if being succinct were a fault, and, these same books have tended to display considerable bias. I am very pleased to have in my hands a book that has not [yet] shown bias on the part of the author and the author has done such a good job of succinctly presenting all of these conflicting ideas in a manner that makes both the original ideas and their conflicts very clear. Thank you to the author for having provided this important text.

I've given this book 4 stars because the footnotes are not live. You have to search the book, just as you would for a printed book, to find each book mark. By "live footnotes" i mean that you can click on a footnote and you will be taken to the footnote and with a button you can return to the point where you were reading. Live footnotes provide a better reading flow than with printed books. Given that this is a nonfiction, complex, eBook i expected live footnotes.

While the advice may not be much different from that in other books such as Klagsbrun's Too Young to Die (Houghton, 1976), the format and the tone are different. The advice is concrete and concise. In advising how to deal with someone who is feeling depressed or suicidal, Gordon does not give general ideas of what to say or do; he states, ``Say this, not that. Do this, not that.'' This specificity should be helpful and comforting. The format is inviting, with many black-and-white photos and drawings. The page layout is open. There is no index, but the table of contents is complete. Among the topics discussed which may cause depression are troubles with parents, loss of faith, sex and love worries and troubles with peers. Gordon gives suggestions for further reading, and in one case suggests asking a librarian for guidance. A list of crisis and suicide prevention hotlines nationwide is included. Although the book is published by a Jewish organization, Gordon emphasizes that the few religious messages could be applied to any faith or be ignored by those of no faith. When I heard Dr Gordon speak as a young rabbi, my mind was somehow closed to his message. I cannot believe my stupidity. This book is a must-read for parents, case workers or clergy concerned about a child or teenager.

encouraging

I read this book while I was incarerated. This book help to lead me back to my path of God. And to understand myself, the crime I commited and why. I read this book in an hour, I was and still am forever touched by this book. I have looked in local bookstores for this book and have not been able to find it. I think this book should be put in rehab. facilities for all to read. I honestly believe they can change the story to fit anyones life and their addictions. Thanks for this wonderful life changing book.

Important; Not Definitive

Two earlier reviewers offer fine and informed reviews of this book; reviews that go into useful detail. Make no mistake: this is a very fine book on the craft of charcuterie. It begins with herbs and spices, goes on to talk about a range of tools and equipment--both simple items and 'nice to have' ones and clearly presents recipes from 'The Fatted Calf' and the techniques used to produce them. Reviewers have rightly praised the full-color photos in the book: they are particularly effective teaching illustrations for 'breaking down' cuts of beef, poultry, pork, rabbit and so on. These photos are the best I have seen in twenty-some years of buying books on this subject. Interested readers will know how to produce any of the items presented in the book and will be ready to add other charcuterie books to their collection.

This book and its recipes 'delivers the goods' on many specialties. I am particularly grateful for the porchetta recipes, of Italian inspiration. I ate wonderful 'street food' porchetta sandwiches in Tuscany and tried to imagine how to do this 'at home.' Now I know. You will know, too, if you can 'transpose' the seasonings from one meat to another (rabbit to pork) or can move the same seasonings on to the recipe for a 'Cuban' presented a few pages later. Francophiles will find a very fine recipe for cassoulet.

One earlier reviewer notes what I can only echo: there are a good many recipes for baking and roasting items. Readers will appreciate that, even if going so far 'downstream' from making sausages and terrines and curing meats is unexpected in a book of this type. Chapter titles include: The Charcutier's Pantry; Provisioning the Larder (they mean a root cellar); In the Butcher Shop (where the photos of breaking down the cuts are concentrated along with unexpected and useful information about meats and fats); Skewered, Rolled and Stuffed (Items); Sausage, Salami and their Cousins; Pates, Potted Meats, Terrines and Loaves; Brined, Cured and Smoked and what the authors call 'Accoutrements'--really, condiments. This last chapter goes beyond the technical scope of 'charcuterie' but will be of interest for its recipes on bread and butter pickles, cucumber dills, pickled red onion rings, chowchow, mostarda, chutney and the like.

You WILL want to buy this book for your working library but it is not necessarily the first book you should buy. In recent years, the Marianski brothers book 'Home Production of Quality Meats and Sausages' includes better ideas and techniques for curing and smoking hams and for making breakfast sausage--my first foray into charcuterie (but I began with Fanny Farmer and Rytek Kutas' almost encyclopedic book on the commercial sausage kitchen.) The Marianski brothers offer a wider range of recipes than this book does but their recipes are different and not necessarily better. They do offer better instruction on using sodium nitrate and sodium nitrite as essential preservatives right in the recipe for many cured meat items. My recommendation would be to purchase both books. Taken together, they provide an up to date coverage of a fascinating and tasty culinary subject.

I love this book.

Excuse me for yelling but I LOVE THIS BOOK. From the beautiful cover to the detailed recipes for so many things I want to make, it's just great. The butchery photos are detailed and instructive and the recipes are almost "curated" to fit their aesthetic. If you love eating and cooking, you will love this book. The authors go deep and narrow rather than trying to please the crowd. If you want easy crock pot recipes for a weeknight, this probably isn't your book.
I've taken this book to bed everynight since it arrived and have been reading it like a novel. That may tell you more about me than the book, but there you have it!

Amazing book for anyone who wants to know more about meat

I am a person who is interested in the "why" as much as the "how" in cooking and In The Charcuterie goes above and beyond to satisfy this curiosity. The first 150 pages are an in depth look at how to utilize those underutilized parts of the animals such as fat, skin and bones and also feature beautifully photographed and precisely described guides to whole animal butchery. Continuing through the book you are met with original recipes that vary in levels of difficulty from the multi-day process of making headcheese to simpler but equally delicious recipes such as the pork country rib roast marinated with sherry and pimenton. My favorite part is a two page chart that outlines the spice kits, casing types and grinds of 14 different sausages which is a great reference point once you are proficient in sausage making and interested in creating your own recipes. This book is so important for anyone who is wanting to learn about meat and it is so beautiful even a vegetarian could enjoy it.

The Cure for Mediocre Writing

I use this book in my AP Language and Composition class. My Seniors suffer all the typical problems . . . wordiness, imprecise use of language, poor introductions and conclusions, and weak transitions. Nuts and Bolts addresses all of these, and does so in a clear, convincing manner.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to tighten his writing.

Haven't read it but if it's anything like the website...

...it'll be good. The Nuts and Bolts Website helped me turn a C minus literary criticism paper (I was devastated - I couldn't figure out what I had done wrong) into an A. My particular problem is structuring my ideas logically and building a solid argument. This site, along with an hour with a good tutor ("No, what you have here is NOT a thesis statement!"), and another hour with my eminently logical husband (he's an engineer who works a lot with lawyers) helped me finally understand that I had to, in effect, build a path with brick walls on either side of it, leading my reader along by the hand, rather than wandering all over the countryside to every distraction, expecting my reader to keep up with my desultory ramblings and then find his own way back to the road. And how to do it.

The site is, unlike me, clear, methodical, and understandable, which is very important when you just can't grasp something because it's in your Writer's Blindspot.

So far delicious

Great purchase for my wife for Christmas! It's working out great as she has made three recipes in the first week! She did say the recipes are pretty complex, not 5 minute jobs like you see on the TV show. There are pictures of the contestants throughout the book but none of Ramsay, I can see they had license to use Hell's Kitchen but maybe not Ramsey's image?

I like the book quite a lot. I have not made any of the recipes, although several look good.

We are fans of the show more than of Gordon Ramsay's cooking, so this was exactly what we wanted - recipes that were used on the show. It includes standards of the show menu (scallops, risotto, beef wellington) as well as recipes created by the contestants.

The book is nicely photographed and designed, definitely worth the price.

I love it. Very basic instructions, how to set up kitchen, pantry, what equipment your kitchen should have.I am an experience cook I believe its a good teaching book. It helps to know how to cook but a beginner may have a hard time with the recipes at first but its a good teaching book. Just follow what he says.
